Friday Nights
I got off of work a little early so I thought I'd post a little bit. I went in early too, hence the getting off early. We were pretty slow though. I didn't make very good tips and I only had 3 tables. They were never filled either. Oh well, can't have great days every day.
Sidework is...well, sidework. Fill dressing containers, make sure butter is on the table, stock everything, get the drink machine operational. It's not terrible, I kind of like it actually. Makes time go by quickly. It's very messy work though.
I had some interesting questions this evening. I suppose since it was slow and I had more time to spend with my tables, it's bound to happen.
o This gentleman ordered a ribeye steak but kept talking about the 'fish'. Finally he says, "I'll have the steak, but can I have a 'bite' of the fish on the side? I've never had grouper before and I'm wondering what it tastes like." I blink a couple of times, my mind scrambling to comprehend. "Um. Well, no. I'm sorry, the fish are packaged 'plate ready' but you can order an appetizer that has the fish included in it." To which I get a blank stare. Lovely.
o A personal favorite... "Will the shrimp platter fill me up?" Do I look like I know how hungry you are??
o "How big are the shrimp?" I bite my lip and reply, "Well, they aren't popcorn shrimp and they're not jumbo shrimp.
o "Are the collard greens good here?" I really want to say I think collard greens are gross and I have no idea, but I lie through my teeth. "Absolutely. Some of the best around." -I- don't have to think they are good right, as long as -someone- does?
I had my first 'table fight' over the check. I asked a party of 7 if it was going to be all one check and of course they wanted to divide it. As I was leaving an older gentleman from the party pulled me aside and said he was going to take care of it, just to live him the ticket. I could honestly care less as long as 'someone' pays. So I brought the ticket out and handed it to him. The other people started clammering, "Where's our ticket?!" to which I replied, I've been asked to put all of the orders together. "That's not what we told you to do!?" I smiled and said I'd be happy to give them a few minutes to sort out the politics of the check. When I came back the table was empty and I had a really great tip. All's well that end's well.
Keep your fingers crossed. Tomorrow is another 3pm. I hope it's busier than tonight was.
To really top off the night I came home to a mint chocolate chip pie as a 'welcome' gift..thing. Such a sweet gesture. I live with the coolest people! The pie was excellent, and I'm sure it will continue to be excellent seeing as there is more than half left since certain people would not share in the indulgence. Poopface. lol, just kidding.
